24 Hour Recap

It was relatively warm yesterday, partly cloudy and the snow was pretty slow and slushy for most of the day. The snow began early last night and has been falling consistently all night.

Weather Outlook

The snow should die off a bit during the day today and then pick up again in the evening. A bit of low cloud hanging around tomorrow we may see a little more snow but the next big fall will be on Friday where we’re looking at another 30cm+. Clearing up Saturday and then more snow Sunday and Monday.

Warnings

Avalanche risk is elevated today. Fresh snow on hardpack/ice can be a dangerous combination, make wise choices!

Myoko Snow Report 23 February 2016: Current Conditions

Awesome conditions in Akakura this morning with mostly sunny skies and only a few high clouds about. Light winds and -5 degrees.

24 Hour Recap

The low cloud and fog we had in the morning yesterday cleared out by lunchtime and we had a few hours of sun. High cloud cover moved in in the afternoon though and things cooled down very quickly again. The snow was pretty icy yesterday morning with a few cm of fresh snow on top making for some interesting conditions. The cloud cover cleared out overnight and we have mostly sunny skies this morning.

Weather Outlook

Temperatures drop and winds pick up tonight as this north westerly airflow arrives and brings a good dump of snow tomorrow. Totals aren’t looking huge at this stage but we’re expecting at least 30cm. Clearing Thursday and then another front arrives soon after on Thursday night. The bad news is that this front has been downgraded significantly since yesterdays report, however I wouldn’t be surpised if it bounces back the other way soon and projected snow totals increase again.

Myoko Snow Report 20 February 2016: Current Conditions

A warm 3 degrees this morning with plenty of high cloud cover about and moderate southerly winds. After two days of sun and warm temps the snow will be soft and wet today.

24 Hour Recap

We had an awesome day out on the hill yesterday with plenty of sun, warm temps and relatively light winds. The clouds rolled in last night, however we haven’t picked up any rain yet.

Weather Outlook

High cloud cover about this morning before the rain rolls in this afternoon. Forecasting models are suggesting around 2 or 3pm however looking at the radar this morning it looks like we’ll get a bit of drizzle before then. North westerly winds take over tonight and the temperature drops, bringing some light snow. Light snow Sunday and Monday before another cold heavy dump hits us on Tuesday. Staying cold and snowy Wednesday and Thursday.

Myoko Snow Report 19 February 2016: Current Conditions

Partly cloudy skies this morning and super slick as it was relatively cold last night. Light winds and -2 degrees.

24 Hour Recap

A beautiful day yesterday it started out pretty cold, but warmed up quickly in the sun. We had a clear night so all that warmth disappeared pretty quickly and the snow is still fresh but a little crusty on top.

Weather Outlook

Another warm and mostly clear day today before some rain and wind arrives tomorrow from the south. Turning to snow Saturday night we look set to pick up another decent dump Sunday. Warming up Monday and Tuesday and then a decent sized snow storm moves in Wednesday.

Myoko Snow Report 18 February 2016: Current Conditions

Mostly fine this morning with a few low lying clouds hanging around in the valley. The snow is fresh and fairly deep. -6 degrees in the village.

24 Hour Recap

Sunshine below the clouds at sunrise yesterday before the heavy snow set in. I was in Suginohara, Akakura and Seki yesterday and as is usually the case Seki got the most. In fact Seki Onsen received the most of any snow in Japan over the previous 24 hours! Knee to waist deep for most of the day and up to the chest in some protected areas. The snow cleared out last night and we have clear skies this morning.

A shot from my afternoon in Seki after 7 hours of heavy snow

Weather Outlook

Sunny and calm today and tomorrow before that rain hits us on Saturday. Cooling Sunday for a bit more snow and then a mix of light snow and sunshine for Monday and Tuesday. Another big dump is on the cards for Wednesday, but that’s a while away so the forecast may fluctuate.
