The storm clouds roll in

Myoko Kogen Snow Report

After a few warm days and some sticky snow we had a freeze last night and the snow should be a little quicker today, don’t get used to those groomers just yet as there is a huge storm front rolling through and we are about to be swamped in snow! Wax those powder skis and boards kids!

If you are to have any chance of anything slightly untracked you’ll have to do some hiking. Over in Madarao Kogen this morning it was pretty much a mixture of ice and slush. Getting in amongst the trees wasn’t much better unfortunately. Pic thanks to The Daily Flake.

With all the thunder and lightning the night before we thought yesterday would be a total bust, we were wrong! Madarao has some pretty decent powder to be had and Akakura Kanko in the higher areas was pretty darn good 🙂
Today the sun is out and it is looking like the start to a beautiful day, the reports are flip flopping about what is going to happen tomorrow whether we will get snow or rain, lets just pray to the snow gods that they come through with the goods 🙂

Myoko Kogen Snow Report 31st January 2014

The storm clears

Myoko Kogen Snow Report

So it was a bit of a wild night last night, thunder and lightning, a bit of rain. However the cold front moved in and the snow has started to come. We have only had 3cm so far however it is still snowing lightly on and off at the moment. The sun sticks it’s head through the clouds for awhile then goes away while there’s another smattering of snow. Piste condition will be average today and a lot of the powder pockets have been pillaged. Light snow is forecast but hopefully we’ll get a bit more than that.

The rain before the snow

Myoko Kogen Snow Report

I’ve said it before, it doesn’t rain very often in Myoko however all of Honshu us currently seeing some very erratic temperature fluctuations and right now it has sent the freezing level super high leaving us with a bit of a drizzly day, however it is set to cool down and fingers crossed this turns to beautiful snow. On the up side you will have the mountain to yourself!

This is the scene at Akakura today…. yes this is a joke about it being nice weather for ducks, and no, I don’t regret this terrible sketch 🙂

Here is a crazy panorama from last week shot from the back of the Mt Myoko crater, click to see slightly larger version 🙂

Almost like a spring day in Myoko

Myoko Kogen Snow Report

It’s another great sunny day here in Myoko. In many days it’s feeling almost like Spring, very odd for the end of January. There’s been no snow in the last 24 hours and everybody was out carving it up yesterday. So the powder is mainly tracked but there will still be some left for the adventurous.

This was the scene at Ikenotaira Onsen yesterday. Early on the piste was quite solid and a little icy but generally softened as the day went on. A lot of powder was tracked out by lunchtime. Will be similar conditions today onpiste with maybe still some powder pockets in the trees.

The weather calmed down yesterday and even though it went from sunshine to flat light the conditions were fantastic, fresh powder still to be found everywhere. There has been a further few centimetres added overnight adding a soft top to the base. Temperatures have remained cold today with some occasional heavy bursts of snow. Up on the mountain it’s pretty much a whiteout with limited visibility.
