Another great day to be out on the mountain. Yesterday people were still getting fresh tracks getting near to lift closing time. The snow continued through most of yesterday and into this morning. This morning was very cloudy but as the the day has gone on we are starting to see some blue skies. The piste today will be a mixture of compacted and untracked snow with plenty of fresh in the trees.

The morning we were all waiting for, it dumped! There was around 30-50cm in the village and who knows how much up on the hill. It was nice, light and fluffy stuff too, not wet at all. Reports and pics are coming in now about depth and condition. Akakura Onsen is claiming a 70cm fall this morning on their website, whilst Akakan is claiming a mere 45cm. Seki Onsen officially got the tenth largest dump overnight in Japan at 36cm up to 7am whilst over in Nozawa Onsen they did even better with 39cm.

Myoko Kogen Snow Report

A nice sunny day here in Myoko with some cloud. There is some chance of rain later in the day and possibly tomorrow. The temperatures are abnormally warm for this time of year. Down in Myoko City (Arai) they have a forecast top today of 13°! The Myoko weather forecast fortunately shows more snow returning on Tuesday through to Thursday. Today conditions will be akin to a pleasant springtime ski. Firm pistes softening as the day goes on. Alright for some gentle turns and a couple of beers in the sun afterwards.

We had about 10-20cm or so of snow last night. It started out as rain and then quickly turned into lots of nice white fluffy flakes. This was not forecast so it’s a bit of a bonus. It’s left a nice soft topping, albeit a bit wet/heavy, on the piste but I imagine will get tracked out quickly today if you’re not fast enough. Next snow is forecast for Friday.

It’s been snowing pretty much since last night without much let up. I’ve already had to go down this morning and clear 20cm from around the Heart of Japan office. There’s probably another 10-15cm since then. There’s plenty of fresh to be plundered today and up on the mountain it’s very foggy with limited visibility.

Watch out for the crowds at Suginohara!

Unfortunately there has been reports of a few injuries across the region, fortunately not too serious, but mostly to do with people connecting with trees! Because the cover is not quite as good as normal there can be some hazards to watch out for. Be careful out there people. FYI the local Kenritsu Myoko Byoin (hospital) is only small and doctors for particular injuries may not be available at all times. Also very little English is spoken. Hospital location is here.

Myoko Kogen Snow Report

Sorry the report is late today, because, well, everyone is out skiing!!!! I thought our day would go badly when my daughter dropped her ski pole off the lift on the first ride up at Akakura. However she redeemed herself at the top of the second ride when she said, “Daddy, I know a great tree run we can do!”. BTW a big hi to the Sydney group we shared lunch with today at Piste Restaurant.

There’s been a little more snow overnight but otherwise today it’s been a beautiful bluebird day. At Akakura Onsen today the on piste was mostly compact with a soft top. On the sides however there was plenty of untracked powder to find on the sides.

Matt Hull Photography has been out and about today and this is the story they filed.

Anyone who has been to Myoko Kogen knows there there is no shortage of snow, for lack of a better word it ‘pukes’ here. Even thought this snow is heaven for us skiers and boarders for people that live here year round it is a headache to get ride of the mountains of snow we receive a season, so what is the solution? Well many many moons ago back when this town was in it’s infancy the locals utilised the natural onsen hot spring water that flows down from the peaks of Mt Myoko. Channeling this water into a drainage system that flows beneath the town the locals open up the main drainage grates located around town and shovel the snow directly into the flowing hot water, hey presto, no more snow!

In this pic the lovely and very fit Shige San (former manager of the Hotel Windsor) utilises one of these drains. Shige, like most of the hardy snow country women here, is one fit chick! I wouldn’t fight her!
