Myoko Kogen Ski Resorts Guide
Iizuna Kogen Ski Resort, Nagano
OverVIEW
Iizuna-kogen Ski Area (飯綱高原スキー場) in Nagano prefecture, on the lower part of Mount Iizuna, is a medium sized ski resort constructed for the 1990 Ski World Cup and subsequent 1998 Winter Olympics. The terrain is a combination of groomed beginner slopes and tougher mogul runs, with a system of seven ski lifts providing access to the slopes. There is not too much difficult terrain and probably considered best as a family resort.
The resort hosted the freestyle skiing, bobsled and luge events during the Nagano Olympic games of 1998. This is where Satoya Tae won a spectacular gold medal. It also held World Cup races in 1990 and 2001 and races in the Special Olympics World Winter Games (2005). At the foot of Mount Iizuna you’ll find Asia’s first artificial bobsleigh and luge course (see below) which held the Olympic events. This 1700-metre long, three-dimensional track has fifteen curves with an elevation difference of 113 metres. There were some environmental concerns over the construction of the track and new ski area.
Compared to some of it's more well-known neighbours, Iizuna is a more reasonably priced ski resort, although it has very limited runs. It is a great place to go if you are short of time. Its big advantages are that it never gets too crowded although weekends can be a little busy with family groups but not overly crowded. Night skiing is allowed through the week and a snowboard terrain park with a half-pipe is another attraction. Artificial snow makes up for any poor coverage, although if the weather is warm and sunny the snow becomes slushy quite quickly.
