Iizuna Resort Ski Area, Nagano
OverVIEW
Iizuna Resort Ski Area (いいづなリゾートスキー場 - 飯綱リゾートエリア) is part of an all-year-round leisure resort in Nagano prefecture. It is a small ski resort with only six ski lifts and it is sometimes overshadowed by it's newer, yet better known neighbour, Iizuna Kogen Ski Resort. Nonetheless it can still boast a very impressive 600 metres (1968 feet) of vertical descent, a 2500 metre ski run, fewer crowds and generally better snow quality with some opportunity to ski ungroomed snow.
Iizuna Resort is best suited to beginner skiers and snowboarders but there is some terrain for both intermediates and experts (even artificial moguls). Children and beginners are well catered for. There is a 'Kids Park' travelator' with a length of of 100 metres. There are also dedicated sledding slopes and lifts for beginners.
At the foot of Mount Iizuna you’ll find Asia’s first artificial bobsleigh and luge course (see below) which held the Olympic events. This 1700-metre long, three-dimensional track has fifteen curves with an elevation difference of 113 metres. There were some environmental concerns over the construction of the track and new ski area.
Iizuna Resort is easily accessible from Nagano City (30-40 minutes) and can therefore get a little crowded on weekends with families and daytrippers.
