OverVIEW
Madarao Sympathique Ski Resort (斑尾高原サンパティックスキー場) and Madarao Toyota Ski Resort (斑尾高原 豊田スキー場) in Madarao-Kogen are located close to each other in the Madarao region of Iiyama city in northern Nagano Prefecture. One lift ticket covers both of the resorts with shuttle services between the two. is a small resort with a vertical drop of 190 metres. It is best suited to skiers and snowboarders at beginner and intermediate levels. There is one beginner run and one intermediate course as well as one short advanced course. This resort is usually uncrowded, although with only two lifts the queues can be long on certain days.
Madarao Kogen Sympathique Ski Resort is quite near to Nagano City as well as the resorts in Myoko, Niigata as well as Nozawa Onsen. There are wonderful views of Mt Myoko on a clear day. The Sympathique Hotel restaurant has a good range of food at a reasonable price. There is also a restaurant at the top of the hill with moderately expensive food.

ACCESS:
By Train: Take the Nagano Shinkansen from Tokyo to Nagano Station, then take the Iiyama local line to Iiyama Station. Madarao is about thirty minutes by bus from Iiyama Station.During winter there is a direct bus service from JR Nagano Station to Madarao Kogen.
By car from Tokyo: Take the Kanetsu Expressway, changing to the Joshinetsu Expressway. Leave the expressway at the Toyota Iiyama Interchange, then take Route 117 and follow the signposts to Madarao Kogen. From the Interchange, it takes about 20 minutes to get to Madarao.
By car from Nagoya: Take the Chuo Expressway then the Nagano Expressway onto the Joshinetsu Expressway. Leave the expressway at the Toyota Iiyama Interchange, then take Route 117 and follow the signposts to Madarao Kogen. From the Interchange, it takes about 20 minutes to get to Madarao.

Tokyo Ski Buses to Madarao Sympathique Ski Area
Between December and April Ski Bus Club runs both night and day bus services between Tokyo Station, Shinjuku and Ikebukero to the Madarao ski areas. They also run services from the same locations to Tangram.
Travex runs a ski bus service direct from Tokyo Station or Ikebukero to the following ski resort areas - Kurohime-Kogen, Myoko Kogen resorts and Tangram Ski Circus. Another service is provided for the Madarao ski areas.
The cost for both services is also 4,000 yen one way or 7,500 yen return.
During winter there is a direct bus service from JR Nagano Station to Madarao Kogen.
