Myoko Snow Report 1 January 2016: Happy New Year!

Myoko Snow Report 1 January 2016

Report by David Churchill / Myoko Snowsports

Happy New Year everyone. The snow gods brought us another 15cm+ overnight to bring the snow base to 100cm. Light snow this morning and clear skies expected this afternoon.

Lots of people out and about in Akakura last night with many people heading to the local Shine at midnight to receive blessings and welcome in the New Year.

The snow also came to the party with 10+cm on the ground by 1am and close to double that by the time Akakan fired up its gondola at 6:15 for dawn skiing this morning. Those keen enough to get out of bed (and sober enough to ski) were rewarded with free sake and fresh powder turns. Not a bad way to start 2016!

Myoko Snow Report 30 December 2015: Cloudy with Light Snow.

Myoko Snow Report 30 December 2015

After a great day on the mountain yesterday, it was cold and clear last night in Myoko and there’s a bit of ice around this morning. The clouds moved back in a few hours ago and its grey out there. We’ve got a light dusting of snow on the ground and it’s snowing outside now, but nothing of note. The temperature was -1 at 7am outside the Red Warehouse in Akakura and looks set to stay around or just below zero for the next two days.

The Myoko Snow Sports crew headed over to Tangram yesterday for some deep powder. A pretty epic day, by all reports. Photos by David Churchill / Myoko Snow Sports:

With the New Year Holidays coming up, there were a few people out and about around the village last night and more people rolling into town this morning. Looks like this weekend could be busy.

Up the mountain, the groomers will have had a bit of snow to work with after yesterday’s snowfall so snow conditions should be good on-piste, with a few powder stashes still around. Visibility will be poor this morning though.

Looking ahead, we’re in for more snow tomorrow ahead of a warm, and sunny weekend.

Myoko Snow Report 29 December 2015: Plenty of Pow Overnight.

Myoko Snow Report 29 December 2015

After a perfect cold and clear day yesterday, we woke up to a really solid dump of fresh powder in Myoko this morning. The image above was taken yesterday at Seki Onsen. After another 50cm+ overnight, today will be deep to say the least. If you haven’t been out on the hill yet, you should probably stop reading this and get out there asap.

Here in Akakura, the moisture didn’t hit until late yesterday night but by 6:00am we had 30cm+ on the ground. Another 10-15cm has fallen since then and it’s still snowing lightly. It wasn’t super cold overnight, so the snow may be a little heavy, but it’ll still be a fun, deep powder day out there.

Myoko Snow Report 29 December 2015

Outside Red Warehouse Lodge in Akaura early this morning. We’ve got another 10-15cm since then.

The temperature was -1 at 6:30 am and is forecast to drop throughout the rest of today.

Akakan reported 40cm of fresh overnight with an 85cm base this morning. Guests returning from the mountain reported waist-deep drifts on the upper un-groomed slopes.

The Myoko Snow Sports crew hit Seki Onsen yesterday and reported knee-to-thigh deep powder. The resort reported 50+cm of snow overnight and a 1.5cm base, so today should be pretty good over there.

Myoko Snow Report 29 December 2015 Yesterday at Seki: blue skies and fresh pow.  Add another 50cm+ for an idea of today’s conditions!

This snow on top of the base from the past few days should allow the resorts to opening up properly from now on. However, cover is still marginal off-piste so be careful if you duck into the trees.

The temperature is forecast to warm up a bit over the next few days before we get some more snow on Thursday night.

If you haven’t skied yet today, get out there and enjoy a proper powder day in Myoko!

From now to Thursday we should see light winds and better visibility. With the temperatures staying reasonably cool it should be fun skiing on a good base at all resorts.

Here are a few images from Akakan yesterday. Most of the mountain was open, and it’s really starting to look like winter in Myoko.

Current snow and weather conditions in Myoko now:

Myoko Snow Report 28 December 2015: Cold and Clear

Myoko Snow Report 28 December 2015

It’s a cold and clear morning in Myoko today. The mercury was sitting on -6 degrees outside the Red Warehouse Lodge at 7:00am this morning with little wind. We got some snow yesterday, somewhere around ½ metre in village. All the resorts had lifts open, and there was some fun, early-season powder about all day.

David Churchill from Myoko Snowsports was out on the slopes with his camera:

Here are a few images from yesterday and this morning:

The trees are starting to fill in, but it’s still too soon to safely get off-piste. Be careful of branches and shrubs hidden under yesterday’s snow if you’re ducking of the side of runs in search of some fresh.

It should be clear and sunny all morning before the weather comes back in this afternoon, so get out there and enjoy a beautiful day on the mountain in Myoko.

Myoko Snow Report 27 December 2015: It’s Dumping!

Myoko Snow Report 27 December 2015

Report by David Churchill / Myoko Snowsports

The moderate snowfall last night is expected to continue into the day and become lighter tonight. A clear start to the day tomorrow before another 20-40cm tomorrow night.

Myoko Snow Report 27 December 2015

Conditions updates from Red Warehouse:

We woke up to the dull thud of snow sliding off the Red Warehouse roof at 2:30am this morning and it’s been bucketing down since then. The temperature was sitting around zero at 4:30 am in the village but had dropped to -1 degree by dawn. By 7:00am snow-blowers and loaders were in full force and there was at least 20-30cm of snow on the ground. It’s still dumping now and showing no sign of letting up any time soon.

It’s good to see the snow starting to pile up properly and this should be enough for the resorts to open a good number of runs. Seki Onsen reported nearly a metre of snow on the ground this morning.

It’s a good day to be in Myoko. Get out there!

The Low That Might Just Ruin Christmas

Japan’s snow season has not got off to the best start this year, particularly on Honshu. Many resorts are still unable to open due to lack of snow and those that have are offering only limited skiing.

For the past week everyone’s been hoping the weather system moving over Japan from today into the weekend will finally get the season underway. But with forecast totals dropping daily there are more than a few people wondering if Santa is going to come through with the goods or not.

Here’s the current outlook:

Myoyo snow report

image: snow-forecast.com

Let’s have a look at what’s really going on:

All weather maps are taken from snow-forecast.com. Click through to their site for more details.

The chart below shows us the current situation. The pressure gradient between the big high over China and the low to the west of northern Honshu has set up a northerly airflow that is funneling cold air down across the Sea of Japan from Siberia. This looks like it should develop into the classic NW airstream that is responsible for Japan’s big, dry snowfalls. That’s what the models were picking up earlier this week and why such big snowfall figures were cast about for the next two days.

myoko snow report

This pattern will see the temperatures drop in Honshu over Christmas day as the cold air moves in. It was siting around zero in Akakura, Myoko at 6am this morning and there was some light rain around.

We’ll probably see a bit of more rain lower down early today as the temperature falls but we should have some snow by tonight. Then things go a little pair-shaped as the small low-pressure cell in the top left of the frame above establishes itself over the Sea of Japan and disrupts the northerly flow tonight. This pushes warmer air from the west in over the southern Japanese Alps and is responsible for the temperature spike forecast through Saturday in Honshu. Hokkaido is doing better out of this.

Screen Shot 2015-12-25 at 7.27.53 AM

By Saturday night the low has moved out into the North Pacific and we’ll see a cold northerly airflow again as the isobars bunch up. This will bring temperatures right down across Japan and should give us the best snowfall from this system.

Screen Shot 2015-12-25 at 7.28.08 AM

The high takes control as of Monday morning in Honshu. Hokkaido should still be cold and snowy under an established NW airflow, but resorts further south such as Hakuba and Myoko will be hanging their hopes on whatever snow we can squeeze out of this system through Sunday. On the upside, we’ll see low temperatures and light winds into next week – great weather to get out and enjoy whatever snow is on the ground.

Myoko Snow Report

So what does this all mean?

First, we’ll still get snow. Christmas won’t be ruined, but it might be a bit damp to start with and we’re probably not going to see enough snow through today to allow resorts to open properly. Boxing day will be warmer than we’d like, and the best snow from this system is likely to come through from tomorrow night through Sunday. The resorts in Honshu are right on the edge of this NW airflow so things could still go better than expected. If low stalls out to the east of Japan and the high over China is weaker than expected we could see the strong NW winds and a lot more snow than expected through Saturday night and Sunday.

Let’s hope it’ll be a happy new year for Japan!

Myoko Snow Report 24 December 2015: Warm Today, Snow Tomorrow

Myoko Snow Report 24 December 2015

Report by David Churchill / Myoko Snowsports

It’s sunny out on the mountain now, but there’s a chance we may see a bit of rain today ahead of the snow expected to hit tomorrow. We generally multiply the snow-forecast.com numbers by three so at this stage we’re looking at around 70cm between Friday and Sunday, which will set us up nicely for the season.

Myoko Snow report 22 December 2015

It’s a foggy and damp morning in Myoko today. The temperature looks like it stayed above zero in the village overnight, and it was +3degrees outside the Red Warehouse Lodge at 7:30am this morning. We’ve had a bit of rain down here in the village over the past 24 hours which has taken a bite out of the recent snow. Up higher they may have seen a bit of snow overnight, but whatever fell will be wet. Akakura Onsen are running Yodel 2 & 3 lifts today if you’re keen for a few laps.

Despite the moisture around at the moment, it’s not all doom and gloom and for the committed, there are some early season turns to be had. Here are a couple of shots from Nozawa over the past two days before the weather closed back in:

121A1165 121A1087

The weather is supposed to clear up tomorrow with the freezing level sitting right up around the top lifts for the next two days.

Looking forward, the good news is that we are still looking a really big dump as the freezing level drops from Christmas onward and some really severe weather moves in from the north-west on boxing day.
