Myoko Snow Report 19 December 2015: More Snow Overnight.

Myoko Snow Report 19 December 2015

More Snow Overnight

After yesterday’s sun, the clouds rolled back in last night and the snow machine fired up again.

Myoko Snow Report 19 December 2015

We got another 10cm or so in Akakura overnight and it’s still dumping down out there at the moment. Up on the mountain, there may be a bit more on the ground. Driving up to Suginohara and Akakan yesterday there seemed to be a bit more coverage than down in the village. We’re still not talking huge amounts, but there’s a good cover sticking to everything now and it’s starting to look like winter proper out there. With a bit of luck we’ll get a bit more snow through this morning before things start to clear up again.

Myoko Snow Report 19 December 2015 Myoko Snow Report 19 December 2015

Temperature outside the Red Warehouse Lodge was sitting around zero at 7am but the snow on the ground was reasonably dry. The temperature is forecast to stay low through today before the freezing level starts to climb through tomorrow. By Wednesday and Thursday that freezing level might be a concern as the next band of moisture moves in. We’ll keep an eye on that over the next few days and hope Santa comes through with the goods for a white Christmas.

Resort opening dates are still up in the air. From yesterday’s media releases, all resorts scheduled to open today had postponed pending snow. Last night’s falls might see some re-consider, but as the weather is supposed to clear through today, I’d be surprised to see much open this weekend.
We’ll report any updates on our Facebook page.

Myoko Snow Report 18 December 2015: Good Morning Winter!

Myoko Snow Report 18 December 2015

Good Morning Winter!

Winter has arrived and it’s looking pretty good this morning in Myoko. About 15-20cm of fresh snow fell overnight and the village and mountains looked amazing at dawn. There’s no wind and it looks like we could see some sun today. More snow is forecast tonight.

The temperature was +0.5 degrees at 7:20 outside Red Warehouse lodge in Akakura so hopefully it’ll stay cold as forecast for the next 48 hours.

Here are a few shots from around the Akakura and Akakan:

What does this mean for skiing? Well, it’s a start but it’d only ankle deep – even if you were grass skiing. So we’re going to need more snow.

Many of the resorts scheduled to open over the weekend have postponed (see here) but as of last night Madarao was supposed to open this morning.

There’s still some snow forecast for tonight:

Myoko Snow Report 18 December 2015

If that comes through, then it’s possible some resorts may still decide to fire up a lift or two but realistically whatever riding there to be done over the weekend will probably be pretty token.

But it’s a good start and hopefully it’ll be all systems go before too long. Bring on winter!

Myoko Ski Resort Opening Dates 2015-2016

Myoko Ski Resort Opening Dates 2015-2016

The snow has been falling steadily today in Myoko. By dusk the cars had a few centimetres coating and the ground was pretty much covered throughout the village. But starting from scratch it’s always going to take a while before the ground cools and the white stuff starts to pile up properly.

For the operators of the Myoko ski resorts scheduled to open over the next few days, tonight may be a sleepless one. Ikenotaira has already pulled the pin on opening tomorrow while Akakan, Akakura Onsen and Seki Onsen are taking a wait-and-see approach. Madarao is betting pretty heavily on the next 12 hours and is scheduled to open at 7:00am tomorrow.

It’s snowing now and it’s possible we could still see a decent dump by the morning, but it looks like it’ll dry up through the day before turning the taps on again tomorrow night.

The pictures below were taken on dusk this evening:

Tomorrow morning will be interesting. For the resorts it could be a case of too-little, too-late or maybe just-enough just-in-time. Either way, there’s unlikely to be a heap of terrain open from whatever lifts get spinning over the weekend. But as season after season proves in Japan, it’s just a matter of time now.

Here’s the latest on the resorts’ opening plans:

SuginoHara
is still scheduled to open Saturday December 19, snow dependent.

Ikenotaira Onsen has postponed its scheduled Friday December 18 opening, pending snowfall.More info: www.ikenotaira.net

Tangram Ski Circus is scheduled to open Saturday December 19, to be confirmed tomorrow morning. More info: www.tangram.jp/ski

Myoko Snow Report 17 December 2015

It’s started…

The temperature dropped overnight and was sitting at -8 outside the Red Warehouse Lodge in Myoko this morning. The village got a lick of white paint overnight  down past the Akakan Resort base and it’s still snowing outside now. So it’s nice to have a good Myoko Snow Report 17 December 2015

With a bit of luck that should continue throughout today and tonight. Temperatures are set to stay low right through to Sunday, with the freezing level hovering around the bottom lifts at most resorts and some more snow forecast.

The waiting game

Welcome to the Myoko Snow Report December 16 2015. It’s a cool, overcast morning here in Myoko. The thermometer outside the door is reading 5 degrees and there’s a bit of light rain about today.

There’s still no snow on the ground in town and by the looks of the mountain, the resorts will need a dump before the end of the week to be able to open as planned this weekend.

The good news is that temperatures are forecast to drop through today and into tonight, with the freezing level set to dip below 1000m by tomorrow and stay there through to the end of the week. Hopefully we’ll see some snow on the ground by the weekend.

The temperature is forecast to  drop and there’s plenty of moisture around – fingers crossed!

With the resorts’ opening days rapidly approaching, the Myoko ski community, town officials and school children gathered at the town shrine yesterday morning for the annual season-opening ceremony and pray for a safe and prosperous season. Lets hope the snow gods are listening!

The weather calmed down yesterday and even though it went from sunshine to flat light the conditions were fantastic, fresh powder still to be found everywhere. There has been a further few centimetres added overnight adding a soft top to the base. Temperatures have remained cold today with some occasional heavy bursts of snow. Up on the mountain it’s pretty much a whiteout with limited visibility.

The snow continued right through most of yesterday morning bringing half a metre of fresh to most resorts over a 24 hour period. It slowed down later in the afternoon and then it’s been very cold overnight.

Today there will be plenty of powder to be found on the side and amongst the trees. The sun is shining, the sky is blue, go out there and rip it up folks! This is what you have to look forward to.

BBBRRRRRRRRRR! Can you believe we got -15 degrees here last night? There was some snow yesterday which was followed by a clear night meaning the temperatures plummeted. Hope everyone had their electric blankets working to fend off the Myoko snow monkeys, er, brass monkeys.

After a day of dumping snow yesterday the storm has broken and the sun is poking through the early morning fog. The diggers are finishing up clearing snow from the last few days, time for the drivers to get some time on the slopes!
