Myoko Snow Report 8 January 2016: Clear Skies and Fresh Snow

Myoko Snow Report 8 January 2016

Current Conditions
Clear morning with very light wind. Cool overnight and with a bit of ice around on the roads this morning. It snowed into yesterday evening so there should be fresh up on the mountain. Temperature was -0.5 outside Red Warehouse in Akakura this morning. The small low pressure cell that was forecast to give us a temperature spike today looks like it may not develop as strongly as expected so fingers crossed it stays cold today ahead of more snow tonight and later in the weekend. It’ll be a great morning out on the hill. Get out there.

24 Hour Recap
It started snowing before dawn in Myoko yesterday and it continued dumping all day. In all we probably got around 20-25cm. From all reports it was a fun day at Akakan and Madarao. Shiga Kogen also got some much-needed snow, and you’d assume the same for Nozawa. The snow cleared up in Myoko late evening but there’s more on the way tonight.

Today’s Picks
It should be a great morning on the mountain. Groomers will be good with some fresh snow. Still probably too early to hit the trees, but the snow should be in good condition. Get up there and have fun!

A couple of shots from this morning:

Weather Outlook
We’re back in a northerly airflow and we’ve got some snow on the ground. These are good things. Even better is that the temperature looks like it’ll stay reasonably low through today ahead of good snowfall tonight. Things should stay cold right through into next week. With another good dump expected Sunday night through Monday, next week is looking really good.

Myoko Snow Report 6 January 2016: Waiting for Tomorrow.

Myoko Snow Report 6 January 2016

Report by David Churchill / Myoko Snowsports

A few cm of snow last night have topped up the pistes nicely, however it may be best to wait a few days before tackling the trees or any ungroomed runs.

Current Conditions
A few clouds around this morning with excellent visibility and plenty of sun. Light winds. Looks like another fine day on the mountain in Akaura today. We had a few centimeters of snow overnight but nowhere near enough to make up for what we’ve lost from the warm weather over the past two days. Ikenotaira closed a quad lift yesterday due to lack of snow and guests returning from Suginohara and Akakan reported lots of dirt showing through on upper runs. We need some more snow and everyone is hoping big system moving in tomorrow will bring temperatures back into a typical January range and deliver enough snow to get the season back on track properly.

24 Hour Recap
We’ve had hard packed snow conditions for a few days now. Groomed runs have been great, however any ungroomed runs were fairly icy and bumpy yesterday. Warm in the morning yesterday but temperatures dropped through the day with a few centimeters of wet snow falling from lunchtime onward.

Today’s Picks
Head to the groomers this morning for some fresh tracks. The terrain park should soften up this afternoon for a bit of fun.

Weather Outlook
Everyone’s hoping to tomorrow will see a return to winter proper on Honshu. We can expect decent falls through Thursday but, as with the last few systems, resorts at the southern end of the Japanese Alps (ie. Myoko & Hakuba) may not receive the full brunt of this northerly airstream across. There’s a temperature spike forecast for Friday before things get cold and snowy through the weekend into next week. This system is looking good, but the synoptic situation could see snowfall figures go either way and we may see the models change a bit before the weekend.

Myoko Snow Report 4 January 2016: Sunny Days but Snow on the Way

Myoko Snow Report 4 January 2016

Sunny and warm again today, cooling tomorrow and a return to winter on the weekend.

Current Conditions:
It’s another very warm day today in Myoko. Clear skies overnight saw the temperature drop overnight, but it was +7 degrees in Akakura by 10am and still warming up. It doesn’t feel like January in Japan, but with the sun out and light winds, it’ll be a beautiful day up on the mountain with soft snow until the sun drops later today.

24 Hour Recap:
Yesterday was also super warm. There was a bit of ice around early morning but the snow softened quickly and there were plenty of people out on the slopes making the most of the fine weather over the Japanese New Year holidays.

Staff Picks
The groomers should be great this morning and with the sun out, it’ll be a great day to explore the mountain with the family or head to the terrain park for a some spring-like conditions. Have fun out there!

Weather Outlook:
The current westerly airflow over Honshu is responsible for the unseasonally warm weather over the past few days. The good news is that a northerly stream will re-establish itself through tomorrow, bringing some snow. By Thursday, we should be in the grips of a proper winter system and unless things go terribly wrong over the course of the week, we should be seeing a return to winter and significant snowfall right through from Thursday evening to Monday morning.

Myoko Snow Report 3 January 2016

Report by David Churchill / Myoko Snowsports

Sunny weather for the next two days before more snow on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. We should see 50+cm fall over these three days. Yesterday I was lucky enough to ski Madarao and Tangram and although the snow is packed there was still plenty of fresh tracks to be had in the trees through some fairly soft but heavy knee deep snow.

Weather Outlook:

It was a warm, fun day on the mountain yesterday in Myoko. The Japanese New Year holidays are in full swing and the resorts were busy as everyone made the most of the soft snow and sunshine. It looks like we’re in for another fine day today.

With clear skies overnight the temperatures dropped to -4 degrees at 6:30am outside Red Warehouse Lodge in Akakura this morning. By 8:30am it was up around zero, and with the sun out things are starting to warm up.

The current warm, clear weather continues through tomorrow, when the northerly airflow re-establishes itself and cools things down on Tuesday. We’re looking at some snow overnight into Wednesday, but by the weekend the isobars are bunching up and we should see some good snowfall from Saturday through to Monday.

The resorts have started to put in park features and a lot of young riders were taking advantage of the spring-like conditions to hit up the rail and box lines at Ikenotaira yesterday. They’re going to need a lot more snow to start building properly, but the current setups should keep a few people happy while we wait for the next big dump on the weekend.

Myoko Snow Report 2 January 2016: Warm Weekend Ahead

Myoko Snow Report 2 January 2016

Report by David Churchill / Myoko Snowsports

It’s a partly cloudy day today with sunny weather expected for Sunday and Monday. The next snow will arrive on Tuesday and we’re expecting around 10-20cm.

Weather Outlook:

It was mild and overcast in Myoko but things are going to warm up through the day. We had an amazing sunrise over Madarao this morning but, as the proverb goes, red-sky-in-the-morning might be a warning for skiers and boarders in Myoko: we are looking at some warm weather over the next few days.

The north-westerly airflow that has been piling up snow in Myoko since Christmas has now broken down. The weekend should see higher temperatures and fine conditions as a high sitting to the south-west of Japan draws air in from the south-east.

Images: snow-forecast.com

The temperature was sitting at -0.5 outside the Red Warehouse in Akakura at 7:00am this morning, but was pushing into positive territory by 8:30am and forecast to rise throughout today. Freezing levels are forecast to hover up around the top lifts until Tuesday evening and with the sun out we’ll likely to have freeze-thaw conditions on the lower mountain at least.

Myoko Snow Report 2 December 2015

On a positive note, there’s plenty of snow around and the weather’s going to be great with light winds and plenty of sun. So get up on the mountain and enjoy good groomed conditions and amazing views of the Japanese Alps!

Myoko Snow Report 1 January 2016: Happy New Year!

Myoko Snow Report 1 January 2016

Report by David Churchill / Myoko Snowsports

Happy New Year everyone. The snow gods brought us another 15cm+ overnight to bring the snow base to 100cm. Light snow this morning and clear skies expected this afternoon.

Lots of people out and about in Akakura last night with many people heading to the local Shine at midnight to receive blessings and welcome in the New Year.

The snow also came to the party with 10+cm on the ground by 1am and close to double that by the time Akakan fired up its gondola at 6:15 for dawn skiing this morning. Those keen enough to get out of bed (and sober enough to ski) were rewarded with free sake and fresh powder turns. Not a bad way to start 2016!

Myoko Snow Report 30 December 2015

After a great day on the mountain yesterday, it was cold and clear last night in Myoko and there’s a bit of ice around this morning. The clouds moved back in a few hours ago and its grey out there. We’ve got a light dusting of snow on the ground and it’s snowing outside now, but nothing of note. The temperature was -1 at 7am outside the Red Warehouse in Akakura and looks set to stay around or just below zero for the next two days.

The Myoko Snow Sports crew headed over to Tangram yesterday for some deep powder. A pretty epic day, by all reports. Photos by David Churchill / Myoko Snow Sports:

With the New Year Holidays coming up, there were a few people out and about around the village last night and more people rolling into town this morning. Looks like this weekend could be busy.

Up the mountain, the groomers will have had a bit of snow to work with after yesterday’s snowfall so snow conditions should be good on-piste, with a few powder stashes still around. Visibility will be poor this morning though.

Looking ahead, we’re in for more snow tomorrow ahead of a warm, and sunny weekend.

Myoko Snow Report 29 December 2015: Plenty of Pow Overnight.

Myoko Snow Report 29 December 2015

After a perfect cold and clear day yesterday, we woke up to a really solid dump of fresh powder in Myoko this morning. The image above was taken yesterday at Seki Onsen. After another 50cm+ overnight, today will be deep to say the least. If you haven’t been out on the hill yet, you should probably stop reading this and get out there asap.

Here in Akakura, the moisture didn’t hit until late yesterday night but by 6:00am we had 30cm+ on the ground. Another 10-15cm has fallen since then and it’s still snowing lightly. It wasn’t super cold overnight, so the snow may be a little heavy, but it’ll still be a fun, deep powder day out there.

Myoko Snow Report 29 December 2015

Outside Red Warehouse Lodge in Akaura early this morning. We’ve got another 10-15cm since then.

The temperature was -1 at 6:30 am and is forecast to drop throughout the rest of today.

Akakan reported 40cm of fresh overnight with an 85cm base this morning. Guests returning from the mountain reported waist-deep drifts on the upper un-groomed slopes.

The Myoko Snow Sports crew hit Seki Onsen yesterday and reported knee-to-thigh deep powder. The resort reported 50+cm of snow overnight and a 1.5cm base, so today should be pretty good over there.

Myoko Snow Report 29 December 2015 Yesterday at Seki: blue skies and fresh pow.  Add another 50cm+ for an idea of today’s conditions!
Image: David Churchill / Myoko Snowsports.

This snow on top of the base from the past few days should allow the resorts to opening up properly from now on. However, cover is still marginal off-piste so be careful if you duck into the trees.

The temperature is forecast to warm up a bit over the next few days before we get some more snow on Thursday night.

If you haven’t skied yet today, get out there and enjoy a proper powder day in Myoko!

From now to Thursday we should see light winds and better visibility. With the temperatures staying reasonably cool it should be fun skiing on a good base at all resorts.

Here are a few images from Akakan yesterday. Most of the mountain was open, and it’s really starting to look like winter in Myoko.
