Myoko Snow Report 27 December 2015: It’s Dumping!

Myoko Snow Report 27 December 2015

Report by David Churchill / Myoko Snowsports

The moderate snowfall last night is expected to continue into the day and become lighter tonight. A clear start to the day tomorrow before another 20-40cm tomorrow night.

Myoko Snow Report 27 December 2015

Conditions updates from Red Warehouse:

We woke up to the dull thud of snow sliding off the Red Warehouse roof at 2:30am this morning and it’s been bucketing down since then. The temperature was sitting around zero at 4:30 am in the village but had dropped to -1 degree by dawn. By 7:00am snow-blowers and loaders were in full force and there was at least 20-30cm of snow on the ground. It’s still dumping now and showing no sign of letting up any time soon.

It’s good to see the snow starting to pile up properly and this should be enough for the resorts to open a good number of runs. Seki Onsen reported nearly a metre of snow on the ground this morning.

It’s a good day to be in Myoko. Get out there!

Here are a few images from Akakan’s opening day yesterday:

Myoko Snow Report 24 December 2015: Warm Today, Snow Tomorrow

Myoko Snow Report 24 December 2015

Report by David Churchill / Myoko Snowsports

It’s sunny out on the mountain now, but there’s a chance we may see a bit of rain today ahead of the snow expected to hit tomorrow. We generally multiply the snow-forecast.com numbers by three so at this stage we’re looking at around 70cm between Friday and Sunday, which will set us up nicely for the season.

Myoko Snow report 22 December 2015

It’s a foggy and damp morning in Myoko today. The temperature looks like it stayed above zero in the village overnight, and it was +3degrees outside the Red Warehouse Lodge at 7:30am this morning. We’ve had a bit of rain down here in the village over the past 24 hours which has taken a bite out of the recent snow. Up higher they may have seen a bit of snow overnight, but whatever fell will be wet. Akakura Onsen are running Yodel 2 & 3 lifts today if you’re keen for a few laps.

Despite the moisture around at the moment, it’s not all doom and gloom and for the committed, there are some early season turns to be had. Here are a couple of shots from Nozawa over the past two days before the weather closed back in:

The weather is supposed to clear up tomorrow with the freezing level sitting right up around the top lifts for the next two days.

Looking forward, the good news is that we are still looking a really big dump as the freezing level drops from Christmas onward and some really severe weather moves in from the north-west on boxing day.

This system is still a few days out, but it looks likely to deliver the goods we need to get the winter season up and running for the year.

Myoko Snow Report 21 December 2015: Counting the days ‘till Christmas.

Myoko Snow Report 21 December 2015

Counting the days ‘till Christmas

It’s a warm and overcast morning with a light breeze and some very light drizzle around in Myoko today. The thermometer read +3.5 degrees outside the Red Warehouse Lodge village at 7:15am and things are starting to warm up. After a sunny day yesterday, we’ve had no new snow overnight and warm temps are starting to eat into the snow from the past few days around the village. The freezing level is forecast to stay high for the next few days with no new snow on the radar until Chistmas.

Akaura Onsen and Madarao will have (very) limited lifts open if you’re keen to get out there today. Other Resorts are awaiting new snow.

The good news is that we’re not going to have to wait long for a solid snowfall and it looks like the man in the red suit is going to deliver the goods this year.

Temperatures are forecast to drop through Christmas Day as the next lot of moisture moves in from the north-west. There’s a chance we might see a little rain lower down as that moves in, but that should quickly turn to snow over the whole mountain. By Boxing Day it should be nice and cold. With a bit luck we’ll be looking at a really solid dump of snow that should (fingers crossed) put down a good base over the whole mountain and allow resorts to get up and running properly.

Myoko Snow Report 18 December 2015: Good Morning Winter!

Myoko Snow Report 18 December 2015

Good Morning Winter!

Winter has arrived and it’s looking pretty good this morning in Myoko. About 15-20cm of fresh snow fell overnight and the village and mountains looked amazing at dawn. There’s no wind and it looks like we could see some sun today. More snow is forecast tonight.

The temperature was +0.5 degrees at 7:20 outside Red Warehouse lodge in Akakura so hopefully it’ll stay cold as forecast for the next 48 hours.

Here are a few shots from around the Akakura and Akakan:

What does this mean for skiing? Well, it’s a start but it’d only ankle deep – even if you were grass skiing. So we’re going to need more snow.

Many of the resorts scheduled to open over the weekend have postponed (see here) but as of last night Madarao was supposed to open this morning.

There’s still some snow forecast for tonight:

Myoko Snow Report 18 December 2015

Image: snow-forecast.com

If that comes through, then it’s possible some resorts may still decide to fire up a lift or two but realistically whatever riding there to be done over the weekend will probably be pretty token.

But it’s a good start and hopefully it’ll be all systems go before too long. Bring on winter!

Myoko Ski Resort Opening Dates 2015-2016

Myoko Ski Resort Opening Dates 2015-2016

The snow has been falling steadily today in Myoko. By dusk the cars had a few centimetres coating and the ground was pretty much covered throughout the village. But starting from scratch it’s always going to take a while before the ground cools and the white stuff starts to pile up properly.

For the operators of the Myoko ski resorts scheduled to open over the next few days, tonight may be a sleepless one. Ikenotaira has already pulled the pin on opening tomorrow while Akakan, Akakura Onsen and Seki Onsen are taking a wait-and-see approach. Madarao is betting pretty heavily on the next 12 hours and is scheduled to open at 7:00am tomorrow.

It’s snowing now and it’s possible we could still see a decent dump by the morning, but it looks like it’ll dry up through the day before turning the taps on again tomorrow night.

The pictures below were taken on dusk this evening:

Tomorrow morning will be interesting. For the resorts it could be a case of too-little, too-late or maybe just-enough just-in-time. Either way, there’s unlikely to be a heap of terrain open from whatever lifts get spinning over the weekend. But as season after season proves in Japan, it’s just a matter of time now.

Here’s the latest on the resorts’ opening plans:

SuginoHara
is still scheduled to open Saturday December 19, snow dependent.

Ikenotaira Onsen has postponed its scheduled Friday December 18 opening, pending snowfall.More info: www.ikenotaira.net

Myoko Ski Park is scheduled to open Sunday December 20, but may still postpone.
More Info: www.myoko-skipark.jp/ski_park

Run Run is still scheduled to open December 19, but may postpone.

Madarao Kogen should open Friday December 18.
However, depending on snow, it may only open temporarily for the weekend before closing again from Monday December 21.

Tangram Ski Circus is scheduled to open Saturday December 19, to be confirmed tomorrow morning. More info: www.tangram.jp/ski

Myoko Snow Report 17 December 2015

It’s started…

The temperature dropped overnight and was sitting at -8 outside the Red Warehouse Lodge in Myoko this morning. The village got a lick of white paint overnight  down past the Akakan Resort base and it’s still snowing outside now. So it’s nice to have a good Myoko Snow Report 17 December 2015

With a bit of luck that should continue throughout today and tonight. Temperatures are set to stay low right through to Sunday, with the freezing level hovering around the bottom lifts at most resorts and some more snow forecast.
